In 1989, Rob Stanfa purchased a nursery that he helped start in 1977 and subsequently changed the name to Rolling Hills Nursery & Landscaping. Stanfa knew how to care for the different plants he was selling, but his college education didn’t teach him how to run a business. He sought advice from Rosemary Miller, director of the Murray SBDC. She helped him get his books on track and identified ways the business could be more efficient and profitable.

After nine years of operating in town, Stanfa decided  to find a new location to grow his business. He purchased several acres and developed a plan to construct a new facility. He continued to call upon Rosemary Miller for guidance throughout the project.

“I have used the SBDC at various times since I opened my business 18 years ago. They are always cooperative and eager to help,” Stanfa said.

Stanfa now operates a garden center and a landscape design service. His retail store sells everything from annuals and perennials, to seasonal items, wind chimes and trellises. The garden center also features a variety of displays to educate customers on how plant materials grow. He also runs a full service landscape design service that installs landscaping, brick paver patios, retaining walls, water gardens and drip irrigation systems. He employs 7-8 full-time workers and serves a 50 mile radius around Murray.

Rolling Hills Nursery & Landscaping is the largest nursery and landscaping business in Murray. The business was recently recognized by the Murray Chamber of Commerce as the Mid-Size Business of the Year.
