LEXINGTON, Ky., (Oct. 18, 2016) –The Office of Veterans Business Development recognized Patricia Krausman, director of the Elizabethtown Small Business Development Center, as one of the six most outstanding instructors for the 2016 Boots 2 Business program.

Boots to Business is an entrepreneurial education and training program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. It is a training track within the U.S. Department of Defense’s Transition Assistance Program. The curriculum provides valuable assistance for transitioning service members who are exploring business ownership or other self-employment opportunities. The program leads them through the key steps for evaluating business concepts and providing the foundation required to develop a business plan. In addition, participants are introduced to Small Business Administration partners and resources.

The recognition was based on the instructors’ contributions and dedication to the program and to service members, veterans and spouses in their business ownership endeavors. Nominations for this achievement came from Small Business Administration offices across the country.

Krausman has provided business management consulting and training for more than 20 years. In 2009, she developed and served as the director of the Kentucky Small Business Development Center’s Veterans Assistance Program, the resource for veteran business support and advocacy. Additionally, she was chosen as A Veteran’s Small Business Advocate of the Year in 2013 by the Kentucky Small Business Administration. She takes an active role in her work and advocacy, serving as a member of the Kentucky Commission on Small Business Advocacy, the Lincoln Trail Workforce Development Board and the Governor’s Veterans Interagency Task Force. She was awarded the prestigious Kentucky Association for Economic Development Allied Professional of the Year in 2014.

“The Kentucky Small Business Development Center has a long-standing commitment to veterans and veteran-owned businesses. Boots 2 Business is a program specifically designed by the Small Business Administration and its resource partners to ensure that veterans have expert guidance and direction in their path to entrepreneurship,” Krausman said. “It’s an honor to be included in the recognition of outstanding instructors for the national SBA Boots 2 Business program. Veterans are exceptional entrepreneurs, and it is rewarding to have the opportunity to support them in their successful transition to small-business ownership.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. – In anticipation of the many business opportunities that could stem from the construction of a new federal prison in Roxana, the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, in partnership with Letcher County Fiscal Court, is sponsoring When Opportunity Knocks, a luncheon and resource fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT June 22 at the Pine Mountain Grill in Whitesburg.

During lunch, local business owners will share how they answered the knock of opportunity and found success. The event is free and seating is limited; preregistration is required. Reservations can be made online at http://tinyurl.com/j9rdjtf .

At the event, organizers will discuss a three-part series of training events. Series topics will include general business and government contracting. The first event will take place 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12 at the Whitesburg campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. Training will also take place at 6 p.m. July 26 and August 9. Prior to each training event, a resource fair will begin at 4 p.m.

LEXINGTON, Ky., (May 3, 2016) - Kentucky’s finest small businesses and the small-business community were celebrated in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort during Kentucky Celebrates Small Business, an awards ceremony presented by the Kentucky Small Business Development Center and the Kentucky District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration May 3.

Gov. Matt Bevin opened the awards ceremony by signing a proclamation recognizing National Small Business Week in the state.

"The vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in the commonwealth is a fundamental force driving Kentucky's economy and creating valuable jobs for our communities," Bevin said. "I understand, from personal experience, the sacrifice it takes for small business owners to survive. Every day they strive anew to secure a better life for their customers, their employees, their families and themselves. I am grateful to these men and women across Kentucky for taking the risk necessary to succeed."

WLEX-18 chief meteorologist Bill Meck served as emcee, along with his wife, Connie, whose small business, Sign Language Network of Kentucky, provided sign language interpretation for the event.

The Kentucky Small Business Development Center presented Kentucky Pacesetter awards to six businesses. Winners were chosen based on how they are changing Kentucky’s economic landscape by introducing innovative products, increasing sales and/or production, boosting employment and serving their communities.

This year’s outstanding Kentucky Pacesetters are D&D Shoe Company, Mayfield; Ingram Brothers, LLC, Morgantown; JSB Industrial Solutions, Inc., Tollesboro; Maynard Studios, Inc., Lawrenceburg; Trunnell’s Farm Market & Family Fun Acre, Utica; Flavorman and Distilled Spirits Epicenter, Louisville.

“We owe so much to the small businesses across the commonwealth that make our economy strong and diverse. It is a pleasure to recognize them and say thank you,” said Becky Naugle, KSBDC state director.

Each year, the U.S. Small Business Administration recognizes outstanding small businesses and entrepreneurs with awards across the country. The Small Business Person of the Year winner from each state will be acknowledged at both regional and national levels.

The 2016 Kentucky Small Business Administration award winners are:

Kentucky Small Business Person of the Year: David Dafoe, founder and CEO of Flavorman and Distilled Spirits Epicenter, Louisville

Kentucky Southeast Region 8(a) Graduate of the Year: Kathy Mills, president and CEO of Strategic Communications, Louisville

Kentucky Financial Services Advocate of the Year: Bill Fensterer, president and CEO of Capital Access Corporation, Louisville

Kentucky Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year: Harsha Wijesiri, president of Integrated Engineering, LLC, Lexington

Kentucky Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year: Scott Matheny, president of Semper Tek, Lexington

Kentucky Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year: Desiree Sloan Harmon, founder and owner of Club Fit Studio, LLC, Paintsville

Whatever your motivation is to strive to earn the “best podiatrist in town” title, your patients are looking for the same passion and professionalism when in search of the right doctor for their individual needs. While there is no secret for running the most successful podiatry practice in your community, there are easily obtainable methods available to successfully market your business and expand your services.

Maybe you are the best podiatrist in town and consider your practice and your staff the staple hold of your reputation. How will the local citizens realize this without you pinpointing it first? They won’t. Without efficient advertising your business is established but not growing. Try running an advertisement in the local newspapers or radio to reach a wider audience. Building a reliable and easy to use website is another advertising outlet for your business and provides the opportunity to extensively highlight your services and staff. From printing business cards to handing out pens with your practice’s name, you must remind consumers that you are in business and motivated to serve them.

Someone in need of a podiatrist notices your advertisements or is recommended by others in the community and are considering your practice. They call your office to schedule an appointment and your reputation is immediately in jeopardy. Your advertising campaign has promised exceptional service and your expected to deliver great results. How can you achieve this goal? By simply dedicating your practice to caring about your patients. You began this career for a reason and genuinely caring about your patients is the best form of service you can offer. From staffing your business with compassionate employees, to following through with excellent patient care, the way you treat your customers can have the most impact on your practice’s reputation. When hiring staff, be sure that they meet the professional standards and requirements for the job but that they also value the needs of the patients. Whether it’s a first time visitor or a repeat customer, making your patients feel assisted and comfortable in your office is crucial to running a successful business.

Advertising doesn’t always mean a billboard next to a major intersection or handing out business cards, but it can also mean putting your reputation where your mouth is, or your patient’s mouths, for that matter. Networking with others throughout the community is crucial for sustaining your podiatrist office and word of mouth can be the most impactful marketing tools available. When you provide outstanding service your patients will reflect this with recommendations, repeat business, and loyalty. This form of networking not only builds a strong patient database but it allows for free advertising and perhaps the most reliable and easiest source of promotion available. Networking with other local doctors or hospitals for patient referrals can also help build a positive reputation among the community and prove your willingness to serve to the best of your potential while also getting your name out there.

Even though there is no specific or correct way to successfully brand and market your individual business, by establishing the core values of offering remarkable customer service and patient care along with advertising, the basics for running a successful podiatry practice are already in place.

According to a recent study performed by marketsandmarkets.com, researchers believe the home security market will grow from $28,318.69 million in 2014 to $47,542.52 million by 2020. The report was titled, “ Home Security Solutions Market by Product (Electronic locks, Sensors, Cameras), Solutions (Intruder Alarm, Intercom, Access Control, Fire Protection, Integrated Security, Video Surveillance & Others), Home Type, & Geography - Global Forecast to 2020.”

The report also goes on to say that the majority of the market share will be occupied by the U.S. The global home security market has seen many changes since its inception in the ‘90s. The constant evolution of technology, and the growth of the internet, has increased the ways in which a home owner can keep their property secure.

Investors also see the home security market as profitable. Take BeON Home, for example. The company has created the first Bluetooth Smart-enabled home protection system that provides preventative security and emergency lighting. They announced on Feb. 4 that they’d received $2.9 million in capital. Jopeko, LLC led the effort, and now BeON’s total investment equals around $5 million.

The press release , which BeON released to various outlets via wire, states that they are continuing to update their products and improve them for consumer’s wants and needs.

The marketsandmarkets.com study named the following companies as the industry heavyweights. The major players in the global home security solutions market are Tyco, ASSA ABLOY, UTC Fire & Security, Honeywell International, Inc., Bosch Security Systems, Ingersoll Rand Solutions, Allegion PLC, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited, Control4 Corporation, Alarm.com, and Nortek Security & Control LLC.

However, an article published on BusinessInsider.com in July of last year says that while the big wigs represent more than 90% of the market, there is room for growth in self-installed and self-monitored home security. Consumers will look to build loyalty with tech companies who begin producing home security. The data came from Citi.

“Based on research projections, Citi estimates that self-installed and monitored systems will control 34% of the market in five years, with professional system slipping to 61.6%. In the longer term, 20 years from now, these numbers are projected to basically switch with self-monitored systems holding 62.5% of the market and professional services making up 31.3%,” writes Bob Bryan.

As millenials become home owners, the desire for different home security options will change, but the desire for home security will not go away.

Any way you look at it, home security is a profitable small business venture, with projected growth for many years to come

LEXINGTON, Ky., (Dec. 7, 2015) –The Kentucky Small Business Development Center recognized its staff members for their achievements at the annual fall conference held at The Campbell House.

KSBDC state director Becky Naugle presented the year’s biggest awards. Top honors went to the University of Kentucky center at Elizabethtown, named 2015 Center of the Year. This award is bestowed upon the Small Business Development Center posting the highest results based on the annual goals.

The Morehead District SBDC received the Spirit Award for 2015. This award recognizes the center that demonstrated the SBDC spirit of service to the network and clients during the year.

The Northern Kentucky University center was awarded the Michael Rodriguez Traveling Trophy to acknowledge the largest goal increase achievement during the final six months of the fiscal year.

Lois Decker, of the Owensboro SBDC, was named 2015 Team Player of the Year for exhibiting extraordinary leadership and willingness to assist others. During her tenure, Decker has gone above and beyond in upholding the KSBDC’s mission of creating economic growth and aiding others in achieving success.

Tamela Darnell, of Murray State University SBDC was named 2015 Administration Person of the Year. Darnell was recognized for her diligent work on behalf of clients and fellow co-workers.

David Stevens, of the central office, was recognized as the 2015 Sutton Landry State Star. This honor is presented to an individual who is considered an example of excellence, makes a significant contribution to their center’s program and exhibits dedication to assisting small businesses.

Marge Berge, of the UK Central Office SBDC, was presented the first KSBDC Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her 32 years of exemplary service and dedication to the betterment of the organization as a whole.

In addition, 11 staff members were inducted into the exclusive Kentucky Small Business Development Center Million Dollar Loan Club. This honor is reserved for management consultants who help business clientele secure $1 million or more in loans to start, expand or purchase their companies. Statewide, KSBDC consultants aided entrepreneurs with more than $32 million in loans during the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

KSBDC presented 11 staff members with service awards. Five years of service recipients were: Becky Marefat, UK Bluegrass SBDC; Vallorie Henderson and David Oetken, UK Louisville SBDC; and Miller Slaughter, WKU SBDC. Marking 10 years of service were Shirie Hawkins, UK Bluegrass SBDC; Gordon Garrett, UK Central Office SBDC, and Janet Flaugh and Toni Sears, UK Louisville SBDC. Celebrating 15 years were Dee Dee Harbut, UK Central Office SBDC and John Preston, Eastern Kentucky University SBDC. Hitting the 30-year milestone was Mike Morley from the Morehead State University at Pikeville SBDC.

Dee Dee Harbut, director of the Kentucky Procurement Technical Assistance Center, presented the first annual Three Cheers award to Debbie McKnight. This award is chosen by the clients to recognize a consultant’s hard work with government contracting assistance.

“The impact of KSBDC staff’s hard work reaches every county in Kentucky. I am so proud of the contribution SBDC and PTAC staffs make to our ‘Common Wealth,’ and it is an honor to recognize their accomplishments,” Naugle said.

LEXINGTON, Ky., (Sept. 22, 2015) –The Kentucky Small Business Development Center announced David Stevens, principal accountant, as the recipient of the 2015 Sutton Landry State Star for Kentucky. Stevens was recognized at a private reception during the recent America’s SBDC Conference in San Francisco.

The America’s SBDC honors a state star from each SBDC annually. The award is presented to an individual who is considered an example of excellence, makes a significant contribution to their center’s program and exhibits dedication to assisting small businesses.

“I was honored to accept the state star award at the ASBDC annual conference. I want to give special thanks to our State Director, Becky Naugle, for giving me this wonderful award and opportunity,” Stevens said. “In addition to receiving the award I was given a special tour of Silicon Valley visiting Intuit, Google and Facebook. It was a very educational opportunity which I will never forget.”

Naugle said, “This award is a wonderful way to honor David’s dedication and exemplary service to the small business community and KSBDC.”

Stevens began working at the University of Kentucky in 1980 and joined the KSBDC as the principal accountant in 1989. He is a UK graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.

His dedication to crunching the numbers, proposal preparation and superb budgeting has contributed to the many successes the organization has realized over the past three decades. During his tenure, the network of Kentucky SBDC offices has been noted for extraordinary work, receiving statewide recognition for performance and productivity.
